I just found out that there’s a version of this song where instead of singing, “Tonight I’m loving you,” Enrique sings, “Tonight I’m fucking you.”
This song was fun and titillating to begin with. A lot of Spanish-language pop-artists have long been the best at writing songs for horny people who like to dance in clubs. So the exchange of the euphemism – “loving” – for the crude conjugated verb we all know and adore shouldn’t add all that much to the song. But it does.
And it doesn’t? I mean. This song is already Enrique Iglesias feeding your sexual fantasies about him… So I guess the only reason I find the f-word so exciting is because I’m emotionally stunted at age thirteen?
On the other hand, there’s something to be said about upgrading from the politeness of a gentle euphemism to the crude forcefulness of a forbidden word, right? We can all probably agree that there is a difference between “making love” and “fucking.” You’ll like it either way – I guess it just depends on what mood you’re in.
Anyway. This track is like eight years old at this point. I just found it. I’m going to go listen to it on repeat until it loses all sensation. June is officially going out on a high note.
