Like their fighting, their lovemaking was intense and explosive. The heat between them was nuclear, their nerves electric, and the humming energy of the world seemed powered by their lust. She thought they would burn right through the floor and become a molten, toxic pool.
When it was over and the containment chamber smoldered from the energy exchange, they dozed in the red glow of the flashing radiation hazard lights. In this specific moment and no other, they almost felt what normal must be like. Almost. This wasn’t just an ancient ritual between a man and a woman, but the awesome union of goddess and god; a temporary truce between evil and good, and the perfect, fragile balance of chaos and order.
Like lightning in the dark, his locator burst into a high-pitched series of beeps and shattered the peace. She said nothing but watched his face as he struggled for something to say, something to help him find his way back to reality. He looked up and caught her eye, and found nothing in himself but irritation.
He asked her, “What will you do now?”
She snapped her fingers and violet sparks flew from them. A tiny needle of electricity danced between the crest of her hip and these fingers, which she traced up her belly, between her breasts, then up her neck. She broke the charge on her lips and blew him a kiss. A static jolt smacked him on the face and he winced slightly.
“What do you think I’m going to do, Nuke?” she asked. Her dark amaranthine eyes flickered with the power surging through her body.
“Cause trouble, like always. What am I supposed to do?”
“You’ll be a good boy, try to kill me. We’ll make world headlines one last time.”
NUCLEAR REACTION VS. ELECTRINEXUS, read the headlines of their very first encounter. That day, the skies darkened, the sea boiled, and thousands perished. High levels of radiation left the once-thriving metro uninhabitable. She thought it was a tragedy that he was one of the “good guys.”
“I’m serious,” he said. “Can’t you take some time off or something?”
She laughed. “It’s not a job. No one pays you for having powers unless they get to tell you how to use them.”
For a moment he felt sick to his stomach, but he finished dressing. “Just… Don’t let me catch you for the rest of the night. Please?” That goodness, that incorruptibility melted her. It hurt her, excited her, angered her, like something close but so out of reach it was death to try for it.
She stood up, naked and bewildering, and approached him. Electricity flickered over her eyes and face, conducted by her smooth, unnatural skin. She tilted up to kiss him and whispered, “But you’ve already caught me.” Unable to resist, Nuke pressed his face to hers and braced himself for pain. A flash of searing heat exploded before him and the chamber was alight with a violent discharge. Just as suddenly, it was over and he was alone. Ears ringing and eyes stinging, he tasted the lingering ozone as sparks popped across the floor and disappeared.
He slumped against the wall. Now that he had to wait alone for the radiation to neutralize, he had time to rethink the latest modification to the containment chamber which was supposed to imprison Electrinexus once and for all. Despite her emotional claim to the contrary, she managed to slip by the rubber insulation and escape. Again.
